This Week’s Reader: Spencer Wise

Wise_SpencerSpencer is the author of  “Potatoes,”  which will be included in our upcoming anthology, SmokeLong Quarterly: The Best of the First Ten Years.

About:

Spencer Wise was born in Boston and is a graduate of Tufts University and the University of Texas at Austin. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Narrative, Hayden’s Ferry Review, New Ohio Review, Pank, and Hobart, among others. Wise is working toward his PhD at Florida State University and lives in Tallahassee.

One of Spencer’s Flash:

“Aria”

Flash he likes:

“Ta Chin” by Robert Olen Butler

“Deep in the Heart of Texas” by Robert Travieso

Deal breakers:

I don’t know if I have any specific deal breakers, but the stories that I’m drawn to tend to be character-driven and have a clear sense of something at stake. To hell with tricks—maybe I’m old-fashioned and boring that way, but I like to know what’s going on and who and what it involves. I love lyrical prose but not at the risk of ruining the integrity of the image or the logic of the story.
