I don’t know if I have any specific deal breakers, but the stories that I’m drawn to tend to be character-driven and have a clear sense of something at stake. To hell with tricks—maybe I’m old-fashioned and boring that way, but I like to know what’s going on and who and what it involves. I love lyrical prose but not at the risk of ruining the integrity of the image or the logic of the story.
