This Week’s Reader: Abigail Beckel

ABeckelheadshot1About:

Abigail Beckel is the publisher of Rose Metal Press, an independent, nonprofit publishing house she co-founded in 2006. Rose Metal Press’ mission is to publish and promote books in hybrid genres such as flash fiction, flash nonfiction, prose poetry, novels-in-verse, novellas-in-flash, and text/art collaborations, and to encourage writing that moves beyond traditional genre boundaries by providing a publishing home for authors doing innovative work. Rose Metal Press holds an annual chapbook contest, now in its 8th year, for manuscripts of flash fiction/nonfiction. Beckel has worked professionally in publishing for more than 13 years. She is a published poet and prose writer and lives in Takoma Park, Maryland.

Abigail’s Taste in Flash:

The books Rose Metal has published are the best examples of the kind of flash I love. I actually don’t write much flash myself, so it would be best to highlight my work publishing great flash through Rose Metal. Each catalog page for our books contains an excerpt from the book, which will give submitters a good sense of my sensibilities as an editor. Some examples:

They Could No Longer Contain Themselves: A Collection of Five Flash Chapbooks

A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness: Four Chapbooks of Short Short Fiction by Four Women

The Kind of Girl, by Kim Henderson, our most recent flash chapbook contest winner

Brevity and Echo: An Anthology of Short Short Stories

Deal-Breakers:

I can’t think of any off the top of my head. I try to be open to any skilled and/or surprising use of the form, regardless of subject matter, so I can’t think of anything to list for that.
